The Dartington Hall Trust, founded by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst in 1925, is a pioneering charity dedicated to advancing the arts, social justice, and sustainability. Seeking to enhance its beautiful estate, the Trust wished to introduce external signage that would reflect its unique vision and rich history. The goal was to create new entrance, directional, and location signs that would seamlessly blend with the estate’s natural surroundings while maintaining a creative and contemporary design aesthetic.
Working closely with Dan Coxon, the Marketing and Communications Manager of Dartington Hall Trust, our challenge was to deliver signage that would be visually appealing but also durable enough to withstand the elements. The Trust’s specific requirements called for a solution that would honor the estate’s legacy of art and innovation whilst balancing aesthetically with its more traditional values. The Trust was keen to move away from the plastic materials being offered by alternative suppliers, so our extensive range of durable sustainable materials made us an ideal partner for this project.
To address the client’s needs, our team engaged in a thorough consultation with the Dartington Hall Trust. Through this process, we gained a deep understanding of their brand, vision, and the quirks and challenges of the estate’s environment. We proposed a selection of high-quality materials, including timber, stone, stainless steel, and glass, to ensure longevity while harmonising with the surrounding Devon countryside, the estate’s unique landscaping, and meeting sustainability goals.
During the design phase we introduced clean lines and contemporary styling, reflecting the Trust’s innovative spirit, and mirroring aspects of the estate’s buildings and architectural features. The engineering and manufacturing processes were meticulously planned and managed, focusing on precision and durability. Using advanced production techniques, we created bespoke signage tailored to the Trust’s exact specifications, ensuring that each piece was crafted with care and attention to detail. Sustainability was prioritised in the final choice of materials, complementing the estate’s natural surroundings, and aligning with the Trust’s environmental values while providing a long-lasting quality signage suite.
The outcome of the project is a stunning contemporary collection of signs that greatly enhance the estate’s environment and provide clear, effective navigation for visitors.
