Jurassic Coast

Telling Earth’s Oldest Stories in Stone

Through stone interpretation signage, we brought geology to life at one of the UK’s most iconic locations—the Jurassic Coast. Designed to withstand the elements and inspire exploration, the installation invites visitors to discover 185 million years of natural history, etched into the very materials that define the site.

The Brief: Stone Interpretation Signage for the Jurassic Coast

Stone interpretative signage was at the heart of our collaboration with Bright 3D Design Agency, tasked with delivering standout information features for a key visitor location in Exmouth—part of the Jurassic Coast, England’s only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The installations needed to be durable, sympathetic to the coastal landscape, and visually compelling.

The aim: to create a sculptural, educational experience that would reflect the site’s deep geological significance while encouraging visitor interaction and engagement.

Our Approach

To meet the brief and celebrate the geological significance of the Jurassic coastline, we developed a cohesive and tactile design solution using natural, enduring materials and thoughtful interpretation strategies.

  • Stone Circle Feature
We created a dramatic ring of custom-cut, arched natural stone monoliths, installed to form a complete circle. Each stone was sandblast etched and enamel-filled, ensuring the interpretive content remains sharp, legible, and resilient—even in the harshest coastal conditions.

  • Leaning Stone Panels
To add depth and accessibility to the visitor experience, we integrated smaller, angled stone panels within the circle. These offered layered interpretive content, including QR code plates that link to rich digital resources—encouraging interactive learning beyond the physical space.

  • Timber Seating
Two FSC-certified green oak benches were handcrafted and positioned to invite moments of rest and reflection. Their natural materiality and form were carefully chosen to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, enhancing the installation’s connection to place.

Long Lasting Legacy

The finished signage installation offers far more than just information—it invites curiosity, reflection, and a deeper connection with the landscape and its living story. Through tactile, immersive design and minimal environmental impact, the feature celebrates the timeless beauty of the Jurassic Coast while connecting people to its geological history, as well as to the inhabitants and creatures—past and present—that have called it home. It stands as a lasting tribute to the natural heritage etched into this coastline, engaging visitors of all ages for generations to come.
