Our ambitious heritage signage project has transformed Chester into a must-visit European destination, featuring world-class interpretation and orientation signage that enriches the visitor experience and brings the city’s rich history to life.
In 2008, the city of Chester embarked on an ambitious project to establish itself as a must-see European heritage destination. A key part of this vision was the creation of a world-class interpretation and orientation signage system to enhance the visitor experience and tell the story of Chester’s rich history. We were delighted to be chosen by Imagemakers, the lead interpretive planners, as their trusted partner to bring their Interpretation Masterplan to life.
The project posed several unique challenges:
To meet these challenges, we adopted an approach that combined our traditional craftsmanship skills with cutting-edge techniques. Our team collaborated closely with Imagemakers and key stakeholders to choose materials and design features that would best highlight Chester’s unique heritage, architectural elements, and cityscape.
Consultation & Design: Through an in-depth consultation process, we identified the most suitable materials and production techniques for each signage element. This ensured that the designs were historically sensitive while maintaining high quality and durability.
Materials Chosen: Chester sandstone was selected as a key material due to its geographical and historical significance to the city. We incorporated Marine Grade 316 stainless steel elements to ensure strength and longevity. Additionally, we chose vitreous enamel and etched zinc for the interpretation panels, thanks to their resilience and superior finishes.
Grand amphitheatre lecterns: Designed to withstand the test of time, these striking lecterns feature Marine Grade 316 stainless-steel supports, ensuring exceptional durability. They showcase intricately etched zinc panels or sleek sub-surface acrylic displays, each finished with a sandblasted patterned sandstone base. This adds authenticity and unique design interest and has a strong connection to Chester’s rich heritage.
Etched zinc lecterns: For a refined yet impactful interpretive display, we crafted elegant lecterns with deep 4mm etched zinc plates, securely supported by Marine Grade 316 stainless steel. Finished with a rich, dark blue textured paint, these pieces exude a traditional, aged charm that harmonises with Chester’s historic surroundings.
Freestanding monoliths for Chester Park areas: We carefully constructed towering monoliths made from thick Chester sandstone, incorporating a robust 50mm base panel supported by a stainless steel frame. Sandblasted graphics on the lower section add personality and visual interest to the structures, while the main body features elegant vitreous enamel panels, creating a striking aesthetic focal point that resists both vandalism and the elements.
Our project delivered a visually cohesive and highly durable signage scheme that serves as an impactful yet harmonious feature of Chester city. Each sign acts as a companionable tour guide, enriching visitors’ experiences and deepening their connection to the city’s rich heritage.
