Westonbirt Arboretum, managed by the Forestry Commission and located near Tetbury, is a site of immense historical and ecological significance. Established around 1829, many of its trees date back nearly two centuries. The arboretum includes Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland, specimen plants, and open grasslands, making it a vital conservation area.
We were approached to design and produce signage that would blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings while providing essential wayfinding and educational information to arboretum visitors. The signage needed to be highly durable to withstand outdoor conditions while maintaining an aesthetically sympathetic design that would complement the arboretum’s environment and ecological values.
Our team worked closely with Westonbirt’s team over an 18-month period, gaining an in-depth understanding of their specific needs. The materials we selected needed to be sustainable and in keeping with the natural environment. After much careful consultation, consideration, and on-site testing, FSC-approved* cedar was selected and approved for use, as its natural appearance and durability ensured the signage would not look out of place within the arboretum’s stunning landscape.
To ensure longevity, we made the signage graphics from vitreous enamel, a highly durable material resistant to weathering and vandalism. This combination of materials provided a solution that was both practical in an outdoor environment and visually appealing. We collaborated closely with the Landscape Architect, refining designs based on site trials and feedback to ensure the final signage products would meet all specifications and be well received by visitors.
Our final signage commission included:
Our team ensured a smooth project management process, from production and delivery through to the installation of the forestry wayfinding.
The final signage solution offers a long-lasting, environmentally sympathetic wayfinding, informational, and educational signage system that the client was
delighted with. The high-quality signage blends effortlessly with the natural environment while offering clear and practical information and guidance for visitors.
By providing samples and refining designs through a constructive client feedback process, we were able to develop a product that was both functional and effective while visually cohesive with the arboretum’s natural beauty.
Westonbirt Education Manager, Ben Olive, shared his experience of working with our team:
“We have a great working relationship with Ken White Signs. Being able to talk through ideas and receive samples for testing was invaluable.”
This project stands as a testament to our ability to create signage that respects, harmonises, and enhances natural environments while ensuring durability, visual appeal, and clarity for visitors.
